BROOKLINE ARTS CENTER INDIAN ARTIST EXHIBITION - April 11 - May 7, 2010

Contemporary Indian Artist Venkat Raman Singh Shyam
to be Featured in April Solo Exhibition at Brookline Arts Center

(Brookline, MA - March 9, 2010) According to John H. Bowles, curator of “The Tribal World of Venkat Raman Singh Shyam,” the April 2010 gallery exhibition at the Brookline Arts Center, the Gondi people of Central India are confronted by globalization pressures that present challenges to their cultural traditions. The acceptance of new technology may seem to be synonymous with abandoning tradition.

However, a new technology may serve to extend traditions across physical and cultural borders instead. “The Tribal World of Venkat Raman Singh Shyam” is one example of this global reach. Just as the Pardhan Gonds were the traditional oral record-keepers of their people, Venkat Raman Singh Shyam, like other modern artists of his tribe, is recording history with his art, combining traditional and modern techniques, style and subject matter.

Venkat is the nephew of early contemporary Gond artist Jangarh Singh Shyam. Venkat studied under Jangarh, who encouraged Venkat to paint in his own wide-ranging style, which is narrative and decorative, modern and tribal. Venkat’s work has since been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout India and Europe.

In his first foreign solo exhibition in the U.S., Venkat addresses contemporary events as well as customary folklore. “The Tribal World of Venkat Raman Singh Shyam,” curated by John H. Bowles, will be showing at Brookline Arts Center from April 11th until May 7th 2010. An opening reception with the artist and curator will be held on Sunday, April 11th from 1 to 3pm.

The Brookline Arts Center is located at 86 Monmouth Street, at the corner of St. Mary’s Street, and is open Monday - Friday from 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The Brookline Arts Center is easily reached by public transportation and is wheelchair accessible.
