Hello NBMC friends and supporters!
The National Bitter Melon Council (NBMC) is ringing in the spring with an exciting upcoming show at the Mills Gallery, the Boston Center for the Arts. Last year, the NBMC received an award from Artadia: The Fund for Art and Dialogue, and will be part of the exhibition Artadia Awards 2007: Boston Exhibition which consists of the ten 2007 Artadia award winners in a variety of mediums including the NBMC. We look forward to joining the nine other artists who received the award! The exhibition is open to the public from April 18 to June 15, 2008.
The NBMC will be presenting a gallery installation Bitter Barter under the 2008 New Research initiative and the National Bitter Melon Council Home Office in collaboration with the Mills staff members including its new curator of the Visual Arts Jose Luis Blondet, gallery manger Nate McDermott, volunteer coordinator Nova Benway, and the Mills gallery volunteers and interns. In conjunction with the show, on May 10th, we will celebrate the Goya Honoring Day +2 which, originating in Okinawa, Japan, is a special day to recognize Bitter Melon as a popular ingredient that some even suspect is the secret to the Okinawan longevity! As the second celebration of Goya Honoring Day ("Goya" means Bitter Melon in the Okinawan language) hosted by the NBMC, we will be celebrating with a Saturday afternoon outdoor fair that includes a wide array of activities to learn about and revel in bitterness of all kinds. Of course there will be several appearances throughout by our famed Bitter Melon Mascot. The opportunities for bitter flavor and sweet exchange abound!
The National Bitter Melon Home Office will be open at the Mills Gallery throughout the duration of the show, where the representatives of the NBMC will be holding office hours each week and inviting the public to join them in their "bitter" interventions. Please contact the Mills Gallery for details at (617) 426-5000.
The Goya Honoring Day +2 invites you to:
* Join composer Michael Gardiner and try saying 'I'm not bitter' - without sounding bitter
* Release your bitterness with a chair massage by massage therapist Stephanie Durrel, LCMT
* Get your bitter caricature drawn by artist and caricature artist extraordinaire Will Davenport
* Learn about the use of Bitter Melon to relieve bitterness through social and medical homeopathy
* Play with bitter and sweet tastes and emotions at our kids activity booth with Japanese cultural educator Akemi Chayama from the Boston Children's Museum
And much, much, more!
