MUSIC PERFORMANCE - January 26, 2008
Jed, TVillage
Twisted Village: 12 B Eliot Street Harvard Sq. Cambridge
Twisted Village and Jed Speare celebrate the release of 'Sound Works, 1982-1987' a 2cd set on Family Vineyard that highlights his years on the West Coast, New York and Amsterdam. Speare has been making tape music, field recordings, performances & video installations (& sometimes all at once) for over 30 years. Probably known to you as the creator of 'Cable Car Soundscapes' on Smithsonian Folkways, Speare was also involved in the 80s San Fran underground, appearing on Subterranean Records & the 'Red Spot' compilation.
Speare has also been a member of the Boston experimental intermedia group Mobius Artists Group for 13 years, and served as Mobius' co-director or director from 1996-2004. He currently runs Studio Soto, & continues to present unusual mixed-media performances that juxtapose and combine multiple avant-garde communities and approaches.
"Anybody who heard the Smithsonian Folkways recording 'Cable Car Soundscapes' back in the day will know Speare's work. He is a composer and sound artist whose idea about musique concrete is very different from the other rather rabid experimentalists out there. Speare has continually experimented with the same form and gotten astonishingly different results: he records and splices analogue sound and either combines them with, or juxtaposes them against field recordings made in all sorts of different places and situations. This double disc set on Family Vineyard is an amazing journey through his long form works. There are only five pieces spread over two discs. There is also a killer liner essay by poet and publisher George Quasha in the booklet. This is beyond the concept of electronic music, actually. It feels so real and organic it's almost an addictive listening experience. The really hip thing is he can do this kind of a set live with a few other artists helping hjim out: no samplers, no looping tape recorders, nothing like that; it's real mixology!"
