Opening Reception: Saturday, February 2, 2:00pm - 4:00pm

"Epic Journey; Memoirs on a Motorcycle," opens on February 2 from 2-4 pm, at The Little Gallery under the Stairs in the LynnArts Building, 25 Exchange Street, Lynn. The exhibit presents the photographic and poetic works of Gretjen Helene Hargesheimer's travels across Canada, from Boston to Alaska, to San Francisco on a 1976 Honda CB 550.

Gretjen Helene Hargesheimer's latest collection of photographs and poetry calls upon our innate sense of wanderlust. Hargesheimer captures the essence of the ritual "cross country road trip" through her poetic writings and Holga photographic images. Hargesheimer's multidisciplinary exhibit masterfully depicts the romance, sense of discovery, and spiritual undertones one comes to expect from such a pilgrimage.

Hargesheimer says of her work, "While the photography protects my cherished memories of the scenes passed and the miles traveled once, the poetry holds the experiences we had with other people and within myself."

Each image exemplifies Hargesheimer's distinct sense of design and color as well as her ability to capture moments of happenstance. While each image and poem stands alone with certainty, they express a visual cohesiveness, communicating with each other and the viewer both the personal nature of the journey as well as the intrinsic appeal of such an experience. The images encourage the creation of a series for collectors, but alone serve as beautiful photographic studies. The poetic pieces add their own elemental beauty to the exhibit for those wanting to own a piece of Hargesheimer's verbal tale.

Hargesheimer's photographic work calls us all to experience the expansiveness of North America while committing to a 4in by 4in and 6in by 6in format. While the size may seem limiting for such an experience, the work is intimate; making the journey seem possible leaving the viewer encouraged to plot their own epic journey.

"Epic Journey" runs from February 2 through March 8, 2008. This is Gretjen Hargesheimer's first exhibit at The Little Gallery under the Stairs. A Jamaica Plain resident, Hargesheimer received her BFA from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley, studied under Christopher James at Emerson College and is a Maine Photographic Workshop participant.

The Little Gallery under the Stairs is located in the LynnArts Inc. building at 25 Exchange Street in downtown Lynn's Central Square. Gallery Hours: Tues 11-3, Thurs 6-8, Sat 10-4 and by appointment.
