The Aardvark Jazz Orchestra will perform an eclectic concert entitled Jazz and Social Protest, featuring original compositions by Aardvark music director Mark Harvey. The concert will include the premiere of Harvey's latest piece "NOLA", dedicated to New Orleans, plus other Harvey originals: “Big Oil Tango,” “Peace Soundings," "Charlie's Revenge" (an Aardvark classic, reprised in honor of the MBTA's new Charlie card), and “Scamology,” one of Aardvark’s greatest hits, originally inspired by the Iran Contra Affair, and performed each year in honor of the most notorious scams of the day. In addition, the band will perform the Basie band's arrangement of "Everyday I Have the Blues" and Ellington's "Freedom" (with the Stonehill College Chapel Choir and Collegiate Chorale).

Celebrating its 34th season in 2006-2007, the Aardvark Jazz Orchestra is known for its wide-ranging repertoire: original music by Mark Harvey; works by Duke Ellington and other jazz masters; American music by such composers as Ives, Gottschalk, and Billings; and performances with film, poetry, and dance. Winner of the 2000 Independent Music Awards, the band has premiered more than 90 new works and has released 8 CDs to international acclaim.

Mark Harvey is the founder, music director, principal composer and arranger for Aardvark. He has recorded with George Russell (Blue Note) and Baird Hersey (Arista/Novus) and performed with Gil Evans, Claudio Roditi, Howard McGhee, Sam Rivers, and others. He is a Music Lecturer at MIT and a winner of awards/commissions from ASCAP, the National Endowment, Meet the Composer/Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Commissioning Program, and the Organization of American Kodaly Educators, among others.
