Journeys in Sound presents
Global Music Sketches featuring the debut of Strandön plus Tania Mesa/Andreas Arnold duo

Strandön are vocalist & accordionist Sunniva Brynnel (SWEDEN), pianist Utsav Lal (INDIA), and double bassist Dan Klingsberg (USA). Individually, their experiences are quite broad and reach across a wide spectrum of musical styles. Together they play music inspired by their travels and background. In their sonic world of traditional and original music you will hear Celtic, Swedish, Indian, and American sounds intermingling into a unified whole.

Sunniva Brynnel released a duo album this year with Finnish pianist Timo Alakotila, While living in the UK, she studied with the world class British accordionist Karen Tweed. She is currently attending the New England Conservatory and is a member of Night Tree, this year's NEC "Wild Card" Honors Ensemble.

Utsav Lal has the unique moniker of "raga pianist" as his performances of ragas on piano, a very unconventional instrument for Hindustani Classical music, have won critical praise. He released his first recording at the age of 16. He previously studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and is currently enrolled at the New England Conservatory.

Dan Klingsberg, a former double bassist of the Boston Youth Philharmonic, has worked in a variety of musical formats and is studying music performance at the New England Conservatory.

Tania Mesa is a crossover-style vioiinist, singer, composer and arranger from the Canary Islands (Spain). She graduated in classical violin performance from a conservatory in Barcelona and is cuurently in her final year at Berklee School of Music. Past credits include voice, violin, acting, and dance at the National Theater of Catalonia and Caixaforum. She toured for years with well known Spanish artists Manolo Garcia and Joan Manuel Serrat and also performed with Dream Theater, Alejandro Sanz, and Susana Baca as well as with celebrated flamenco national artists Karime Amaya, Amador Rojas, Mayte Martin, Nino de los Reyes and Antonio Serrano.

Tania is a member of "The World Orchestra" Artists for Peace (UNESCO) with whom she performs music and promotes race relations worldwide in large concert halls as well as less traditional venues in underserved communities.

Andreas Arnold is a guitarist from Germany who studied jazz guitar at the conservatory of Amsterdam as well as in NYC with John Abercrombie and Wayne Krantz but has, of late, been dedicating himself to the art of flamenco guitar. He is currently the musical director for the internationally renowned Jordanian singer Farah Siraj as well as for the New York Flamenco Jazz Project. With Tania Mesa he will perform a set more focused on the creative improvisational side than just purely flamenco.
