GLOUCESTER NORTH SHORE ARTS ASSOCIATION LECTURE - June 8, 2008
“Frank Duveneck and His Boys” Lecture at North Shore Arts Association
North Shore Arts Association in Gloucester will present a Tea and Lecture entitled, “Frank Duveneck and His Boys” by Jim McAllister on Sunday, June 8th. The event is free, open to the public, and will be from 2:00pm – 4:00pm.
In his lifetime, the Cincinnati-based artist Frank Duveneck was a teacher of international renown, a painter of the highest rank, and a mentor to many other artists who cam under his sphere of influence. Duveneck was also a long-time summer resident of Cape Ann and left behind a delightful visual record of the Gloucester he grew to knew and love.
Jim McAllister is a Salem historian, photographer, author, teacher and tour guide. Jim has taught more than fifty courses through the international Elderhostel programs, including the “American Light: Art and Artists on Boston and the North Shore” and “The Golden Years: Painters and Writers in Paris from 1880-1930.” He has also lectured extensively on these themes around the North Shore.
In this illustrated lecture, Jim will chronicle the triumphs and tragedies of Duveneck’s life, and examine his work and impact on the late 19th and early 20th century American art world.
A former art event organizer, long time member of the Salem Cultural Arts Commission, and avid art collector, Jim is also an accomplished photographer and writer. His photographs have appeared in dozens of publications throughout America and Europe. He writes a weekly local history column in the Salem News.

Roger Salisbury Exhibits at North Shore Arts Association
An artist reception will be held for East Gloucester resident and Cape Ann artist Roger Salisbury at the North Shore Arts Association on Sunday, June 1, 2008 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. Salisbury will be in attendance and the public is invited to meet the artist and view his latest series of pastels and oil paintings.
Roger Salisbury was raised in a household of art and medicine. Guided by two parents who were survivors of the depression, medicine was the first profession and art the second. At a very early age Salisbury’s parents instilled in him a strong respect for the sanctity of life and an appreciation for beauty.
Today, as both a reconstructive plastic surgeon and an award winning painter, Salisbury’s upbringing is evident in both his careers. He explained, “The bonuses of a dual education have enriched my life immeasurably. Even while in medical school, I attended the Art Student's League. The skills I developed in art school have helped me to reconstruct mutilated patients and perhaps hone sensitivities to those in need. Dealing with human mortality daily as director of a burn center, has made me appreciate the beauty of the world around me and respect its fragility.”
Salisbury, like so many artists who paint on historic Cape Ann, consistently finds himself on a quest to capture the light of this island in every season of the year. “Pastel is my favorite medium because of its immediacy, brilliance and simplicity.” he said. “Whether drawing with pastel or painting in oil, the goal is always the same, to create rather than destroy. My inspiration is the effort of those who came before me, famous or forgotten, who helped create an artist’s colony we all love.”
In addition to North Shore Arts Association, Roger Salisbury is a member of Rockport Art Association, Pastel Society of America, American Society of Marine Artists, American Artists Professional League, Salmagundi Club, Southern Vermont Art Association and Greenwich Arts Society. His work will be on display at NSAA May 30, 2008 through June 15, 2008.

There is no set theme, but imagery might convey a sense of community and a celebration of living in Somerville. We provide a column wrapped in unprimed canvas. You provide the idea, materials, and equipment needed to paint your proposed column design. You will have a week to finish your column for the Opening Celebration and the work will stay up through September. A modest stipend is granted to all of the accepted artist/groups and you get to keep your artwork. Entry fee.

The Human Condition | Amar Kanwar + Balakrishnan Rajagopal
Amar Kanwar, independent filmmaker, and Balakrishnan Rajagopal, Professor of Law and Development and Director of the Program on Human Rights and Justice at MIT will speak on the topic of The Human Condition. Amar Kanwar will present The Little Museum with reflections on the image that lies between sorrow and resistance. This exploration will include extracts from different film projects such as Shrines 1991-2007, which emerges from labor and indigenous people's resistance movements, The Torn First Pages, which emerges from the Burmese democracy movement and The Lightning Testimonies, which emerges from the search for language to understand the narratives of sexual violence in areas of conflict. Balakrishnan Rajagopal will talk about 'normalizing emergency' in development and human rights terms, drawing on Agamben, but with a specific focus on the condition of Dalits in India.
Amar Kanwar is the recipient of the 1st Edvard Munch Award for Contemporary Art from Norway, an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts, Maine College of Art, USA, the MacArthur Fellowship in India, the Golden Gate Award (San Francisco International Film Festival); Golden Conch (Mumbai International Film Festival); The First Prize (Torino International Film Festival,Italy); Jury’s Award (Film South Asia,Nepal), Grand Prix at EnviroFilm, Slovak Republic and the Golden Tree at the 1st National Environment and Wildlife Film Festival Vatavaran, Delhi. A retrospective of his films was held at the Dhaka International Short Film Festival in 2005. His films have been screened in small rural film festivals as well as international film festivals and museums like the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the National Museum in Oslo, Norway. He participated in Documenta 11 (2002) and Documenta 12 (2007), Kassel, Germany.
Balakrishnan Rajagopal is Associate Professor of Law and Development and Director of the Program on Human Rights and Justice at MIT. A previous member of the Executive Council and Executive Committee of the American Society of International Law, he is currently on the Asia Advisory Board of Human Rights Watch, the International Advisory Committee of the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Center for Human Rights and the International Rights Advocates. He served for many years with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Cambodia, and has consulted with UN agencies, international organizations and leading NGOs on human rights and international legal issues. He is the author of International Law from Below: Development, Social Movements and Third World Resistance (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2003; Foundation Press, South Asia, 2005; Colombia, Spanish, 2005; 2nd edition forthcoming in 2008), and Reshaping Justice: International Law and the Third World (Routledge, co-editor, 2008). He is currently completing a book manuscript on legalization of socio-economic rights in the Global South. He has also published widely in law and other academic journals and in daily media including the Boston Globe, the Hindu, Washington Post and the Nation.

The Human Condition | Amar Kanwar + Balakrishnan Rajagopal
Amar Kanwar, independent filmmaker, and Balakrishnan Rajagopal, Professor of Law and Development and Director of the Program on Human Rights and Justice at MIT will speak on the topic of The Human Condition. Amar Kanwar will present The Little Museum with reflections on the image that lies between sorrow and resistance. This exploration will include extracts from different film projects such as Shrines 1991-2007, which emerges from labor and indigenous people's resistance movements, The Torn First Pages, which emerges from the Burmese democracy movement and The Lightning Testimonies, which emerges from the search for language to understand the narratives of sexual violence in areas of conflict. Balakrishnan Rajagopal will talk about 'normalizing emergency' in development and human rights terms, drawing on Agamben, but with a specific focus on the condition of Dalits in India.

The Peace Drum Project:
After several changes in location this year, things finally settled down in The Peace Drum Project, after sessions were moved to CAI's offices at 311 Forest Hills St. An energetic group of Boston high school students are enrolled in the project this year, and they are developing their problem-solving abilities and social skills while exploring various visual and performing arts activities. Recent trips to Blue Man Group, AAMARP Studios, and a workshop by artist (and CAI board member) Belinda Lyons have fired up the teens creativity in preparation for working on drums for the elders in the coming weeks.
Equally inspiring are the elders we are working with from Farnsworth House, Julia Martin House, and the Bromley Apartments in Jamaica Plain. Most of the elders this year are Boston natives, but their stories are wide ranging and fascinating, and we are excited to share them with the larger community as part of our annual exhibit The 2008 Peace Drums and the elder's stories will be on exhibit from June 4 through July 3 at the Boston Public Library, Jamaica Plain Branch on Sedgwick St. The Peace Drum Celebration & Awards Ceremony will be held at Julia Martin House, 90 Bickford St. on Tuesday, June 3 from 5-7PM.
Plans for the summer and the coming year include a proposed expansion of the project to two locations, reaching twice as many teens and elders. Also in process is a curriculum guide and training package to help other artists and community educators set up similar arts-based intergenerational projects in many other locations. A workshop presenting the project's structure, goals, and assessment techniques was included in this years YouthWork Intensive conference sponsored by The Medical Foundation at UMass Boston in March.
Thanks to CAI's foundation partners who are making this year's project possible including: The Janey Fund, Robbins-deBeaumont Foundation, Foley-Hoag Foundation, and Boston After-School and Beyond. Thank you to all of the individuals who supported the project through CAI's Annual Appeal, and special thanks to Carol Hornblower and Fred Weber who contributed to the Charles Holley Memorial Scholarship Fund again this year. The Scholarship will be presented during the Awards Ceremony.

Be amazed as Ty and Curtis "struggle for supremacy" in the culinary arts, which will be followed by a fine meat or meatless dinner. Your dining experience will be heightened by a live jazz performance. Help us remember and celebrate Charley's life throughout the event. We will also celebrate the release of Music For Building Your Learning Tribe, a Tribal Rhythms® music CD, and present and the new design of CAI's website. Then the celebration will continue with dancing, tribal music making, and drumming. The Cook-off is one of a string of fun filled yearly social and fundraising events for the enjoyment of CAI's Core Community. The Partnership to Achieve Whole School Change:
With funding from The Boston Public Schools for 2008, Partnership artist/educators are working with classroom teachers and their students at the Agassiz, Taylor, Haley, and Sumner Elementary Schools in Jamaica Plain, Dorchester, and Roslindale. Through in-classroom sessions, teachers and Partnership staff focus on implementing classroom strategies that foster "Cognitive Affective Coupling — integrating what the child feels, enjoys, and knows into his or her academic life. To accomplish this, a classroom teacher teams with a Partnership artist/educator to create engaging experiences that connect what students need to learn with their emotional world. One strategy for helping students constructively work with their emotions, and learn empathy, was to have each team lead drum-making and music making lessons. As artist/educators modeled how to present activities that emotionally engage students, teachers learned that they could simultaneously teach social skills, arts, science, and speaking and writing skills in one seamless lesson. Teachers are also realizing that the learning achieved by integrating subjects is superior to the learning achieved teaching one disconnected subject at a time. The Partnership to Achieve Whole School Change:
With funding from The Boston Public Schools for 2008, Partnership artist/educators are working with classroom teachers and their students at the Agassiz, Taylor, Haley, and Sumner Elementary Schools in Jamaica Plain, Dorchester, and Roslindale. Through in-classroom sessions, teachers and Partnership staff focus on implementing classroom strategies that foster "Cognitive Affective Coupling — integrating what the child feels, enjoys, and knows into his or her academic life. To accomplish this, a classroom teacher teams with a Partnership artist/educator to create engaging experiences that connect what students need to learn with their emotional world. One strategy for helping students constructively work with their emotions, and learn empathy, was to have each team lead drum-making and music making lessons. As artist/educators modeled how to present activities that emotionally engage students, teachers learned that they could simultaneously teach social skills, arts, science, and speaking and writing skills in one seamless lesson. Teachers are also realizing that the learning achieved by integrating subjects is superior to the learning achieved teaching one disconnected subject at a time. CAI is part of CommunityWorks, an independent partnership of 27 grass roots organizations working for social and economic justice. CW is currently preparing to take part in workplace campaigns at Northeastern, Brandeis and Tufts Universities, and at Wellesley College. CAI Most Wanted List:
One of the teens in The Peace Drum Project needs an internet ready computer for doing homework and online research. Nothing fancy! A printer to go with it would help if anyone has one. CAI needs a Mac G4 laptop to use for programs. If you have any of these and would like to make a tax-deductible donation, call CAI at 617-524-6378.
Volunteer Opportunities & Internships:
CAI needs volunteers to help with office, grants development, and program support activities. If you have a few hours a week or a day you'd like to help out with short term tasks such as on-line research, data entry, promotional mailings, or program support call us at 617-524-6378.
