NO ART IN SOMERVILLE TODAY?

Is there really No Art in Somerville today?

No galleries open, musicians playing, actors acting, poets presenting, dancers dancing.... well, you get the idea.

According to the online Somerville Arts Calendar, absolutely NOTHING arts-related and open to the public is happening today, neither in the city of Somerville or by Somerville artists presenting elsewhere.

That seems so hard to believe. Do we all have to cross the river for our cultural fix?

If you have somehow just FORGOTTEN to list your exhibit, reception, performance, radio show, just go to our calendar:

http://www.artsomerville.org/calendar/

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "Add an event". This is a moderated calendar but your listing should appear shortly.

SEEKING LOCAL ARTISTS OF ALL DISCIPLINES - April 13, 2007

ArtBeat Call for Talent
ArtBeat 2007 dates: July 20 & 21
This year's theme: ArtBeast

The Somerville Arts Council is looking for musicians, performance artists, dancers, visual artists, storytellers and all creative people to participate in one of the area’s largest public arts festivals. To learn more about the festival, visit www.somervilleartscouncil.org and click on "programs," then "artbeat" to review past lineups.

For just this year we’re changing the name of ArtBeat to ArtBeast. If applicable, send in proposals using “ArtBeast” as an overarching theme. Although bands, for example, don’t need to relate a proposedperformance to the festival theme (although they certainly are welcome to try), we hope many other applicants will relate their proposals to this year’s beastly theme.

We hope to explore this year's theme, ArtBeast, in the broadest possible terms, addressing questions like: What is our relationship with the animal kingdom? How can creatures inspire creativity and artistic production? Beyond the obvious tie-in with animals, we invite artists to unleash their inner beast. What constitutes beastly
behavior? What might be learned from abondoning a domestic existence and exploring a wild and untamed state? Artists and all community members may explore this theme in a variety of ways. Animals lovers might propose a pet competition. A musician or sound artist might incorporate bird calls into a composition. A filmmaker might chronicle cattle ranching in Mexico while an animator might invent a world inhabited by polar bears and eskimos. We look forward to hearing your creative interpretations of this theme!

Note to writers and visual arts: See specific call for an ArtBeast reading at McIntyre & Moore Booksellers. Note to visual artists: See specific call for an ArtBeast art exhibit, to be staged on a Davis Sq. traffic island. These calls will be posted shortly at www.somervilleartscouncil.org
